Olivia woke early the next morning, and her first thoughts were of Daniel. She imagined him dressing in his beautifully cut business suit and heading to the office in his red sports car. Her insides flipped over at the thought of how she had spent the weekend, and she was still reeling from the speed of how things had progressed. She had never imagined last week that she would be in this situation, but she couldn’t help feeling her luck had changed. She was going to be signing a publishing contract, and she had a new, incredibly hot man in her life. She wandered into the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror. She had a slight tan from the weekend and her lips looked full and swollen. “Oh, God Olivia,” she said to herself, “you look like you’ve spent the weekend fucking.” Which of course she had.

She wanted to work on the two unfinished copies of her travel guides today, so she was prepared to put a good day’s work in. She was in a great mood as she brewed the coffee and poured it out and put some toast on for breakfast. Her phone buzzed, showing she had a text, so she ran over to check. It was from Daniel.

“Good morning, Ms. Jefferson. Hope you slept well. Have a great day.” There was a heart emoji at the end.

The sight of a text from Daniel sent warmth through her body. She replied, “Good morning, SEH. Hope your day is spent with thoughts of me–I know mine will be filled with thoughts of you.”

Putting her phone down, she tried not to smile to herself. Hell, I’ve got to get over this, she thought, or I’m going to be walking around like the Cheshire Cat.

Jumping up on a stool at the kitchen island, she munched happily on her toast, to which she had applied a thick layer of orange marmalade. She was just rinsing off her sticky hands when her phone rang. She bounded over, hoping it would be Daniel, but realized it was her parents’ number.

“Olivia, it’s Mammina.” She heard the strong Italian accent of her mother and rolled her eyes, wondering what kind of mood her mercurial mother would be in this morning.

“Hi, Mama. How are you? I haven’t spoken to you in ages.” Olivia could hear The Magic Flute playing in the background and it stirred her childhood memories.

“Daddy told me you broke up with Mark,” her mother continued. “I wanted to check you were okay.” Her mother’s voice sounded clipped and accusatory.

Olivia smiled knowingly. “I’m fine, Mama, honestly. It had just run its course. Time to move on–you know.”

Her mother continued. “He was never good enough for you. You need to set you sights a little higher. It’s high time you found someone and settled down. By the time I was your age, I was married. Start dressing the part, and you’ll soon find someone. You’ll never get a man if you dress like a hobo or a call girl.
